Sunrise over the ghats of Varanasi
Home · Destinations · Varanasi

Varanasi — Soul of India

The oldest living city on earth, where the Ganges carries every prayer. Sunrise over the ghats, the chant of the evening aarti, and a spiritual intensity found nowhere else. Privately, and unhurried.

Why visit

The oldest living city on earth.

Varanasi — Kashi, Banaras — has been continuously lived in for more than three thousand years, and it wears every one of them. Life and death sit side by side on its ghats: pilgrims bathe at dawn, lamps are floated at dusk, and the river holds it all without judgment.

It can overwhelm the first-time visitor — which is exactly why it rewards a calm, knowledgeable guide who knows the quiet ghats, the right hour, and how to move through it all with respect. And never, ever a commission stop.

Ideal duration

A full day with the evening aarti captures the essence. But Varanasi rewards a night: stay over for the dawn boat and a quieter morning on the ghats — the city's most magical hours.

Best time to visit

October to March is cool and ideal, with the grand Dev Deepawali festival in November. Avoid the high monsoon (Jul–Aug), when the river rises and can submerge the lower ghats.

Good to know

Varanasi, answered.

Is photography allowed at the cremation ghats?
No — photography is strictly prohibited at Manikarnika and the cremation areas, out of respect for grieving families and the sanctity of the rites. Your guide will show you how to witness it respectfully, from an appropriate distance.
Is the dawn boat ride worth it?
It's the most beautiful way to see Varanasi — the ghats glowing at first light, pilgrims bathing, temple bells across the water. We offer it as an optional add-on, and most travellers say it's the moment they remember most.
What is the Pind Daan ritual?
Pind Daan is a sacred Hindu rite performed for departed ancestors, and Varanasi is among the holiest places to perform it. We arrange it with care and a learned priest for travellers who wish to undertake it; it's offered as a respectful optional experience.
Is Varanasi overwhelming for first-time visitors?
It can be intense — that's part of its power. A calm, knowledgeable private guide makes all the difference, helping you move through the lanes and ghats at your own pace, with context and respect.
Will you take us to silk shops?
Never. No commission stops is one of our three core promises. If you'd genuinely like to see how Banarasi silk is woven, the Silk Weaving Workshop is an honest, no-pressure add-on.
